Least Common Multiple (LCM)

A common multiple is a number that two other numbers will divide into evenly.  The least common multiple (LCM) is the smallest of the common multiples of two numbers.

Example: Find the least common multiple of 36 and 48.

Step 1:

Factor each number into the product of primes.

Step 2:

Circle those factors that are common to each number.

Step 3:

The LCM is the product of the numbers which are circled
(include one base for each circled pair) and all of the numbers which are not circled.

Thus, the LCM of 36 and 48 is 144.

Alternate Method:

You can also find the LCM by multiplying the two factors together and then dividing the result by the GCF.
i.e.  36 x 48 = 1728.  The GCF of 36 and 48 is 12.  1728 divided by 12 is 144.  Thus, the LCM of 38 and 48 is 144.
