Addition of Integers

Adding 2 integers:

When the integers are both positive, add them.
The answer will also be positive.
+5 + +7 = +12
When the integers are both negative, add
their absolute values.
The answer will also be negative.
-5 + -7 = -12
When the signs of the integers are different,
subtract the absolute values
(the smaller value from the larger value).
The answer will have the same sign as the integer
with the largest absolute value.

Ex. 1:

  +5 + -7 = ?
|-7| - |+5| = 7 - 5 = 2
-7 has the larger absolute value, so the
answer will be negative.
Thus, +5 + -7 = -2

Ex. 2:

  -5 + +7 = ?
|+7| - |-5| = 7 - 5 = 2
+7 has the larger absolute value, so the
answer will be positive.
Thus, -5 + +7 = +2

When the integers are opposites, the sum is 0. +7 + -7 = 0
-5 + +5 = 0

Note: The absolute value of a number is its distance from 0 on a number line.  Absolute values are always positive.  (i.e. |4| = 4 and |-4| = 4 )

Adding more than 2 integers:

Method 1:

Work from left to right and add integers two
at a time, following the rules above.

-13 + 6 + 19 + (-7) + (-5) = ?
  -7    + 19 + (-7) + (-5) =
 12    + (-7) + (-5) =
5        + (-5) = 0

Thus, -13 + 6 + 19 + (-7) + (-5) = 0

Method 2:

Add all of the positive integers together, then
all of the negative integers together, following the rules above.
Finally, add your two answers together, using the rules above.

-13 + 6 + 19 + (-7) + (-5) = ?
6 + 19 + (-13) + (-7) + (-5) =
25    + (-13) + (-7) + (-5) =
25   +       (-20)    + (-5) =
25   +               (-25)     = 0

Thus, -13 + 6 + 19 + (-7) + (-5) = 0
