Some Basics of Algebra

I. Translating to an Algebraic Expression

To translate problems to equations, we need to know which words correspond to which symbols.

** See Key Words for Solving Word Problems Chart **

Example: (page 10 #10 in Intermediate Algebra by Bittinger)

Translate the following into an algebraic expression:

Five less than six percent of some number.

Let n = the number

II. Evaluating an Algebraic Expression

Evaluating an algebraic expression simply means that we are substituting a given value for the variable into the expression and then simplifying it as much as possible.

** Review the Order of Operations ! **

Example: (page 10 #22 in Intermediate Algebra by Bittinger)

Evaluate for a = 3 and b = 7

Example: (page 10 #28 in Intermediate Algebra by Bittinger)

Evaluate for a = 7 and b = 5

Example: (page 10 #30 in Intermediate Algebra by Bittinger)

Find the area of the triangle given the following base and height:

Base = 2.9 m and Height = 2.1 m
